Europa Concept

45

Project Description

It was supposed to be the first manned flight to breach the heliosphere. To leave the solar system behind and escape the background noise of the solar winds. Instead something went horribly wrong. The escape vessel was jettisoned due to a malfunction at just the wrong time and was dragged mercilessly into the Jovian moon Europa. Clambering from the wreckage in one piece it's obvious that there's no way off this barren ice world. The ships a write off and there's no chance of rescue. Not this far out, not for one life.

The only thing left to do is investigate this foreign planet and see what secrets it might hold.
Europa Concept combines adventure, mystery and fps into a lovingly crafted demo.

  1. Im not to sure how crafting works, but this is an awesome game! you sould totaly expand on this. I would even buy a copy of the game when you released it!

  2. Whelp, the horde ate me. Probably because I just ran away from the crash site. I’m terrible at taking directions.

An option to turn the head-bob off would be most welcome.

Stellar visuals, great sound, and I’d like to know how the selection boxes around interactables was done ;)

  3. This looks fantastic! I want to continue playing it, but I’m rather lost with the building issue. I activates the builder bot with a battery, I found instructions for a vehicle but I only found 1 fuel and it needs 4. Whenever I find a fuel tank and investigate it, I get hydrogen instead of fuel. Maybe I have to do something to make fuel out of hydrogen but I have no clue how to do that. I tried randomly putting stuff in the builder robot but I didn’t build a thing. Sadly, I’m lost on Europa.

  4. I really like the visuals! Makes me think of Prometheus, and that makes it pretty emmersive! Gave it a heart instantly.

  5. Great game, had a good time playing it, although the mouse sensitivity was way too low, even after pushing the option slider to the max.

  6. Amazing game!
Really liked, uh, everything about it. Would love to see more!

Couple issues though: Mouse sensitivity is too low and the jeep gets stuck waaaaay too easily. :)

  7. this was very fun the aliens that come out of the arch scared the crap out of me!

but good game keeps you playing.

Only things that i can think of that you might change if you continue with it are

better hand model and gun model

and also it might have bin me but it took quite a while to figure out that i needed to combine the two fuels to get the other fuel and also my jeep got stuck on a tank near the crash site so i had to walk the rest of the way.

  8. Great game.

    *****spoiler*****

After finding the guy in the chair, I went towards the door which closes and ends the game. Was there anything else to look at in that room?

    • I’m not the creator but there wasnt anything a saw. A door to the left of the body you cant intereact with. Other than that it’s barren.

  9. I’m thoroughly wowed! I feel like I just played a complete game, and not just a game jam entry!

My biggest gripe was the jeep getting stuck on rough terrain. As for people making mention of the crafting system being difficult, i missed the text at the bottom of the first reader encouraging me to experiment. If the instruction to play around was near the top of the text I would have more likely read it and had more of an idea that I wasn’t just looking to build the vehicle and needed to craft fuel. Subtle, but hope it’s helps.

Also I would really like to know how on earth (no pun intended) you built such a deep experience in just seven days? Did you have a lot of pre-existing assets that you could use? (Please say yes, for the sake of my own self doubt ;) )

    • it all helps, thanks :) some art assets were combined and edited from older projects and some purchases from unity asset store (NGUI plugin for the win, everytime!), all code is from scratch though and I really enjoyed making a crafting system, not something I’d done before and want to expand it

  10. I played through it without ever figuring out how to build the Jeep, hah. I felt the extensive walks added to the game instead of detracting from it; had plenty of time to soak up the atmosphere.

Great job! Loads of things to like, here. :)

  11. Awesome, I’ve just finished the game, and it’s really great !

You have some suspense, and some moments when you’re afraid (the horde), the final is also great :p

    Congrats !

  12. Great concept game!!!

Really liked it (except head bobbing, it’s a pain). If you made a full game I’ll buy it in a heart beat.

    • Yes head bobbing has been requested to be toned down, thankyou :) I would like to make it into a more complete game for sure we’ll see what time can permit!

  13. Dude, just finished it up. Pretty cool. SPOILERS – One thing that i found interesting though was how it seems to be a straight survival thing as opposed to a survival horror kind of deal. Nice little twist there at the end. Didnt see it coming. I’d like to see this expanded. You can really mess with a players head.

  14. Wow, good job! Pretty landscapes (reminds me of Mass Effect 1). Not a fan of head bob. I was not sure if the gun was there as a joke at first, but glad I had it plus a few hundred bullets on me later…

Got jeep stuck in a radiator, then later on some rocks. But you can only do so much design+dev+QA in a week, right?

    • yeah too true :) I originally planned to have a jeep flipping/pushing mechanism in case it got stuck but completely forgot during development (got too good at driving it and didn’t get it stuck once in the last couple of days ;) )

  15. Just played through the whole game. Wow. Unique, atmospheric, thought-provoking, and zen, with impeccable presentation and attention to detail. This really needs to become a full game. So far my favorite of the 7dfps games.

  16. the 1st thing that catched me was the idea of a crashed spaceship where you suppose to collect materials to craft another vehicle. the survival component combined with the “non-told-story” and the athmosphere pushed me to play further!

    great work!!!!!!

  17. Nice start, great art. I agree with most of the comments here, the head bobing is supper annoying, the jeep interior, hand and gun models need to be higher resolution, and not being able set quick keys to a specific number of inventory items makes the inventory system verry annoying. What use are food, water and med kits if I can’t use them fast enough to not dye.

  18. I loved the atmosphere and driving the Jeep felt great, although there wasn’t really anything worth exploring apart from the crash site and the two points of interest. I had to look up how to get the two extra fuel, as there was no clear indication you had to construct material to construct the vehicle. A way to save the game would’ve been great as well; I died to the horde the first time, and exploring the crash site to gather materials is simply a chore to do the second time around.

I assume you’re going to further develop this game, correct? Is there any site, twitter, or other source of information we can watch to follow further development of the game?

  19. AWESOME concept!
    What I liked most:
    - The atmosphere/mood – it’s very effective. It feels so desolate! The landscape is beautiful. Those aliens are disturbing, and the ending gave me chills… especially the very last moment. Still, I’d love to see this as chapter 1 of something bigger.
    - Very creative how the scavenging gameplay mechanic meant I had to examine all the art assets up close, allowing you to do more with less :) In so many 3d games the player can just breeze right through and not notice all the hard work that went into every little detail throughout the environment.
    - The head bob didn’t bother me at all. Didn’t even consciously notice it, but then again, I’m not the type to get motion sick. Combined with the slow, high jump and the floaty driving mechanics, it helped to effectively convey the feeling of low gravity.
    - When I died the first time (hadn’t found the weapon) I was briefly frustrated, and afraid I’d have to start over. I was very pleased when instead I was placed back at the ship, with all the supplies I had already collected, even the jeep.
    - I was beyond thrilled when the game popped up a hint saying, “you need to find a weapon.” The most frustrating thing about games like this is getting stuck and not knowing what to do next – searching for a hidden object in the environment is much more frustrating when you’re not even sure it’s what you’re supposed to do, and you’re afraid you’re just wasting your time.
    - I like that the focus is on exploration, but there’s some combat to keep things exciting, and the combat doesn’t feel tacked on – it’s pretty strong, for how relatively minor it is.
    - I liked that I could look down and see my own body – I don’t know why that’s so rare in FPS’s.

    What might be improved:
    - As mentioned, there needs to be a way to recover in the jeep.
    - As mentioned, there needs to be a way to quickly use a medkit during battle.
    - The medkit needs to actually work. I selected a medkit, clicked “Use,” and the medkit disappeared, but my health stayed unchanged at 28%. Tried the second medkit – same thing.
    - A trial-and-error crafting system has the potential to be incredibly frustrating. Fortunately, there are only 3 things to craft, and there are recipes for two of them. If the game is expanded, perhaps the game could remember recipes for me, so once I learn or discover one I don’t have to try to remember it when I get back to the build-bot.
    - A HUD that showed me which items I had scanned and which ones I needed to examine closer would be very useful. If the game gets bigger, that HUD might be something you build yourself using the build-bot. That way the player has to search the hard way at the beginning, but later, as searching could potentially get boring and frustrating, you can build the HUD.
    - More hints that pop up at just the right times would be nice, like if the player doesn’t figure out how to make fuel.

  20. Hey so I just want to say, I loved every minute of the 45 minutes it took to beat this. You have a really solid concept here, if you have any intentions on moving forward with this, I strongly urge you to go for it. The game is excellent, it has just the right amount of difficulty and abstraction, intertwined with just enough common sci-fi familiarity (rovers and guns :D ).

Good luck on any future endeavors and you may also think about a Kickstarter or something for this game.

  21. SO, i cant actually play it, because it says that it needs to have Europa_Data next to the executable file, WHICH IT IS. WTF?!?!?

And I’m done!

well I didn’t do too many progress reports… Just too damn busy! I managed to get Thursday and Friday off of work and don’t think I’d of got anywhere close to finishing if I hadn’t. So here’s a set of tasty screenshots to get you in the mood for exploring Europa!

Now I encourage you to play it when you’ve got some time! I understand this is probably premature as your all putting the finishing touches to your games right about now. But here’s the project link!

Go forth Astronaut and download the build

Europa Concept – Update 1

Hey everyone, this is my first blog update for my project called “Europa Concept”.

Here’s a little back story…

You are a lone astronaut who’s ship has crash landed on Jupiters moon Europa. With nothing more than the charred remains of your ship. You must try and survive the bleak ice world.

Survival is at the core of the game with a huge dose of intrigue and mystery thrown in for good measure.  Here’s some screenshots to show you the progress so far.
