Swap Fire

6

Project Description

Swap Fire is an old school fast paced multiplayer FPS with a twist. Line of sight is not the only factor necessary to score or frag an opponent. Instead a successful hit instantiates a swap of combatants, meaning you must put yourself at risk to take someone else out.

  1. It would be nice if you could add bots to play against because when ever i try to play, I’m required to wait for someone else to join the game (which nobody ever joins). overall though it looks like a nice game

Bug or Feature?

I just fixed the arena bounce bug (if you were sitting still when you shot your target they’d bounce out of the arena). I’m still contemplating if that was a bug or a feature ;) In terms of tiny post challenge fixes I’d also like to make the leaderboard look nicer. Finally, I’m looking at a possible iOS port of this game. Beyond that so far people seem to like it so maybe there’s a possibility for a complete game to be done in the Swap Fire universe!

A bit of reflection…

I really enjoyed partaking in the 7DFPS. At the end of the 7 days Swap Fire became a fully functional and complete experience but there are a few things I feel could have been better. For starters, I use Clear for iPhone as my checklist and I left one item on the checklist that I easily could have implemented. The item was “tertiary objects to swap with”. Yesterday there was a good hour or two of non-stop playing on the Swap Fire servers and although the game plays well it became apparent after playing for a bit that the game is still in need of deeper strategy. While I accomplished my goal of making the player think past simple line of sight with the swap mechanic, that mechanic has many deeper uses. I also noticed a few bugs that will be fixed this week including the ability to bounce over 1,000 meters outside the arena. Finally, one regret was that I did not include bots are any sort of single player challenge. I realize it is difficult for people to experience the game when it has to be multiplayer with a minimum of 2 people. Still, for only 7 days (and I burned a few days) I think Swap Fire came out remarkably well.

SWA* Fire, < 20 Hours to go!

OK, we’re on the last day of the 7DFPS challenge and I’m so close to revealing all the details about my entry. Tomorrow I’ll reveal the game and the final letter of the title. Tonight we had a great multiplayer play test on a LAN and game should run over the Internet as well though I imagine I’ll have to add some instructions in case port forwarding becomes an issue. Overall the gameplay was fun, though with just 7 days I’ve only scuffed the surface of what could be done with the primary mechanic. Hopefully people like it as much as I do and I can continue to develop the game to its potential!

First Screen Shot…

Well, there’s only a tad more than 4 days left and I’m just posting the first screen of S*** Fire. Luckily I found some great art assets to coincide with my game’s premise.

In other news, this is running online multiplayer!

More soon…

Lock n’ Load Sunday

After essentially burning 2 days of the challenge S*** Fire (I’ll reveal the complete title by the end of the challenge) is coming along well. I see this challenge as a mechanics challenge more than anything else. I think FPS games have all gotten boring because the only thing you have to think about is line of sight. Therefore the story and graphics of my game aren’t my focus of innovation so I’ve gone ahead and purchased some nice assets to back my concept up. A big thanks goes out to Arteria3D for being quick and patient with some of my requests this morning!

Screen shot coming soon…
